The MARUM – Centre for Marine Environmental Sciences at the University of Bremen, is offering
*One post-doctoral Researcher (f/m/d) for 24 months*
*Salary group 13 TV-L / full-time position*
Within the terrestrially-focused project ‘Holocene Hydroclimate and Carbon Cycle Dynamics in the Central Congo Basin (ORACLE)’ funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) in conjunction with the Agence Nationale de la Recherche (ANR) the work for the position lies in the general areas of compound-specific stable isotope and radiocarbon analyses to unravel hydrologic variations in the Central African peatlands and their consequences for carbon sequestration and emission. The position will be part of a larger cooperation with French (CEREGE Aix-en-Provence, Univ. de Lyon, PALOC Paris), German (University of Cologne), and Congolese colleagues (Univ. Brazzaville) working on geochemistry, palaeo-ecology, hydrology and archaeology. A sampling expedition was planned to the Republic of Congo but currently is delayed due to travel restrictions. It is planned to conduct the expedition at a later stage, if possible. Material (cores, suspension load and riverbed samples) is available from prior expeditions and initial data exist. Specific goals for this position include:
1. Establish the regional history of the tropical peatlands in the
Cuvette Centrale from the context of diverse data
2. Identify climatic and environmental factors leading to erosion
and/or emission of pre-aged carbon in the present and past
3. Publications in high-ranked scientific journals and presentations at
international conferences
Your profile:
* A PhD in a field of Organic Geochemistry or Biogeochemistry
* Knowledge of paleo-climatology, prior experience from working in
peatlands is an advantage
* Skills in preparative gas-chromatography, compound-specific stable
isotope and radiocarbon analyses
* Willingness to participate in fieldwork in remote areas under
challenging conditions, prior experience with fieldwork methods
* Proficiency in English, proven writing skills, speaking French is an
advantage
* Communicating with project partners, organisation of lab work and
workshops
We look forward to receiving your application containing your CV, statement of research interests and copies of relevant documents until August 31, 2020.
