PhD position at MARUM (Bremen) – Paleosalinity in the Red Sea

A PhD position is open at the MARUM (Bremen, Germany) for a highly motivated student with preferentially prior experience in stable isotope geochemistry and organic geochemistry.

Paleo-salinity changes in the Red Sea
The DFG Research Center/Cluster of Excellence /The Ocean in the Earth System/ (MARUM) at the University of Bremen, Germany, has an opening for a PhD project in the area of paleoclimate studies.

The PhD project will focus on the link between past rainfall changes and paleo-salinity variations in the Red Sea. Specifically, the aim is to reconstruct rainfall and paleo-salinity changes using lipid biomarkers and their compound-specific hydrogen isotope compositions. The investigations will be based on existing high-temporal-resolution sedimentary archives from the Red Sea. These archives will allow for a detailed land-sea correlation through the complementary use of terrestrial and marine proxies. This study is directed towards a better understanding of the interaction of rainfall and salinity in the Red Sea region as well as global sea-level variations.

Applicants should have a Diploma or M.Sc. in geosciences or a related discipline. Experience in organic geochemistry and stable isotope geochemistry is most welcome. The successful candidate has strong capabilities in team work, is fluent in English and has a disposition to publish results in international journals.

The position (66 %) is for a period of up to 3 years. Salary will be according to the German civil service remuneration system EG 13 TV-L. As the University of Bremen intends to increase the proportion of female employees in science, women are particularly encouraged to apply. In case of equal personal aptitudes and qualification, disabled persons will be given priority. We welcome applications of people with migrant background.

Complete applications will include a CV, a statement of research interests and accomplishments, and names/addresses of two referees (all combined within a single PDF document). Applications and inquiries regarding this offer should be submitted by email to Dr. Jürgen Pätzold or Dr. Enno Schefuss using reference number A 25/12. Review of applications will begin *April 15, 2012* and continue until the position is filled.Further information on the MARUM can be found here.
